Composite Fillings

A guy laughing after filling at Composite fillings, also known as bonding or white plastic fillings, are a tooth coloured resin material, which is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium, that is both strong and aesthetically pleasing. They are used to restore teeth for a number of reasons:
•  To repair decayed teeth (small to medium-sized fillings)
•  To repair chipped, cracked or worn teeth
•  To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
•  To close spaces between teeth
•  To make teeth look longer
•  To change the shape of teeth
•  As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
•  To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

What Does a Filling Involve?

First, Dr. Glasband will answer any questions you have and will apply anesthetic, if necessary, to the tooth requiring the filling. If there is decay, it will be removed, otherwise, the tooth is prepared (roughened up) and a conditioning liquid applied. These procedures help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. Dr. Glasband will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of your tooth. The tooth-colored, putty-like resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape. A bright, usually blue, light is then used to harden the material. After the material is hardened, Dr. Glasband will further trim and shape it and polish it to match the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface.

Advantages of Composite Fillings

Dental bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. Unlike veneers and crowns, which are customized tooth coverings that are much more involved to produce, bonding usually can be done in one short office visit. Another advantage, compared with veneers and crowns, is that the least amount of tooth enamel is removed. Also, if the restoration is not very deep, there may be no need for local anesthetic.
